Rheingolds’ lecture based on collaboration across the globe to secure the greater good and personal growth; it is not beyond the realm of possibility to conclude it is the nature of humanity to collaborate in order to meet personal and collective needs. Rheingold interpretation of collaboration across time is astute and provides evidence of the human need to collaborate; once more, upon consideration, collaboration also exists in the animal kingdom. Consider ants, and the hierarchy the exhibited by their behavior. The Queen ant delegates tasks, and the workers go out and perform these delegated tasks. This demonstrates the need for organization, a plan, and collaboration necessary to fulfill these tasks. The same obviously is true of humanity.
This same organization is exhibited in classrooms or virtual classrooms the world over. In a 2010 study utilizing groups of students in a scripted collaborative environment, 85% of the students surveyed appreciated the collaborative experience, the dialogue, and activities associated with a Problem Based Learning environment (Papanikolaou & Boubouka, 2010).
Problem Based Learning or PBL, under a scripted environment has shown greater participation, greater achievement, and contributes to higher self-efficacy by allowing students greater participation, and a larger contributory role (Papanikolaou & Boubouka, 2010). By utilizing a scripted environment the facilitator has greater control over inputs, and technology integration. Technologies may vary under this method, but in practice, students only turn in what is asked per the scripts. Utilizing a script to allow students to work in a collaborative setting allows the delegation of roles and responsibilities in a manner contusive to problem solving and the sharing of the responsibility for the end product.
